Bharatanatyam Dance Concert
Natyamandala presents a full margam Bharatanatyam show running about 90 minutes: Nilalohita- the red and blue one. This is one of the thousands of names of Shiva, the primordial Lord of Dance in Indian mythology. They say his breath brought about all the vibrations of the world, his voice music, and his steps, dance. But he is alternately hot and cold. Dancers fall in love with Shiva, who engulfs them in bliss, but then goes into periods of deep self-sacrificial penances or meditations where he cannot be reached which causes them great distress. He constantly fluctuates between immersion and renunciation, which the dancers absorb with a variety of movements, rhythms and emotions: reverence, anger, sadness, and bliss. Further the dancers embody Parvathi or Shakti stabilizes him and gives him strength. Drawing upon our experiences in the present world, we often feel that while the earth can be paradise, it is stormy, dirty, dry, wet, red, blue, and strive to invoke mother nature to restore balance.

The Four Horsemen by Jiva Dance
The Four Horsemen is an innovative Indian Classical dance production, exploring symbolism from the story of the Apocalypse through Indian classical dance, music and Sanskrit poetry. The work centers around four vignettes of life and death through four female protagonists who represent universal human experience. The stories - a woman shackled to the life of a courtesan (conquest), a woman reminiscing the night she spent with her lover who is at war (war), a mother searching for nourishment for her child in the midst a sandstorm (famine), and finally a woman at the end of her life recalling memories that span youthful joy to hardship and loss (death) - are touchingly timely. The work challenges the notion of Indian classical dance content and technique and moves beyond the traditional to incorporate a cross-cultural analysis of female experience. The Four Horsemen highlights original choreography by Sonali Skandan and Maya Kulkarni and the Company with music commissioned to the celebrated composer Rajkumar Bharathi (Chennai, India) and Bala Skandan (NYC) with sound design by Sai Sharavanam of Resound, India. The show features a cast of four dancers – Aishwarya Madhav, Amrita Doshi, Bharathi Penneswaran and Sonali Skandan.

Talattu: Performance by Rukmini Vijayakumar
Talattu addresses two very strong bonds of love that we share in our lives. The bond . between a parent and child and the bond with a lover. The two bonds are very different and we are seen differently by these two very important people in our lives. Talattu, takes the examples of Yashoda and Radha and their love for Krishna. It traces their personal journeys of joys and sorrows and how they deal with Krishna’s departure in very different ways. This event is co-sponsored by the Yale Program for Humanities in Medicine.
